This launches the Reset Password screen, select the Volume Hard Drive in the top part of the window pane, then for the user that you need to reset select the user account in the lower part then add and confirm the new password and click save, you get a confirmation screen and details about the keychain account. It means that if your kid starts up your Mac with an installer disc in the media drive and presses the C key to boot from the disc, the Mac will ignore that key press and move to the login screen.
This is an Apple issue. It sounds like you are using the wrong password. It's the one you enter when you log into your User account. Try updating in a new User.
Go to System Preferences - Create a New User in Accounts. Name it 'Test' Switch to the New User by logging out/in or use Fast User Switching.
See steps here to update. Note: Before you update make sure you have a backup copy of Microsoft Office folder in Applications in Time Machine or a clone. If not, select the folder in the Finder and made a Duplicate. (Under File in the Menu bar select Duplicate or use Command-D) Some users have experienced issues with Outlook in 14.1.4 and have had to revert to 14.1.3. It's easy to revert to the copy if needed. Otherwise you have to re-install Office then update stopping at 14.1.3.
Hi, I just got a new MacBook pro. My old MacBook is old so everything feels weird and new with this one.
The weirdest thing so far was trying to figure out how to turn the damn thing. I ripped the box with my own hands so it's a new MacBook. It wouldn't turn on. Usually all Apple gadgets have some juice in them. Anyway, I plugged in the new weird cord into the electric socket and it turned on. I started the set up process.
It asked me for my country and then BAM. It went dark. I tried to turn it back on again. It stayed dark for half a minute and then turned on again but now instead of taking me back to the set up process which was last seen on the wifi set up, it is now asking me for a password. I didn't set up a $#@$#@$@# password. If I click on skip, it shuts down. I don't know if this is how it's supposed to be or there's something wrong with the computer.
I'm so upset because EVERY SINGLE GADGET I BUY turns out like this. There's always something technically wrong with it. I suspect that the battery was dead out of the box. That usually does not happen, but still might happen, even if legitimately bought direct from Apple. I would suggest letting it charge for 30 minutes or so, just leave it alone. Your new user setup is now unknown, and it is new, with nothing important yet. The shutdowns likely corrupted some of the files, which is understandable, given the circumstances - just don't take it personally - try to fix the system - here's what I would do: Go back to first step, which would have several methods, but I suggest just booting to the recovery system, and wiping the drive, then reinstall macOS.
Boot to Recovery: (after allowing some charging time) press and release the power button, holding Command-R. You will boot to a menu screen. Open Disk Utility. Select your drive, then click Erase. It will warn that you lose unsaved data.
You don't have any, so continue with Erase. When that completes, Quit Disk Utility, which will return you to the main menu screen. Choose Reinstall macOS. Go through a few screens to get that started. You have to choose your erased boot drive as the destination for the install.
Wait for it to complete. Should reboot, maybe reboot twice, and will take 20 - 40 minutes to complete, depending on the speed of your internet connection.
AND, you will end up on the same new user screen that failed before. Go through the simple setup, and you should be all ready to go.

If you get a shutdown during this erase and reinstall, and it goes dark - and stays dark (a normal restart can take a few seconds of 'blackness', so be a bit patient here. ) but dark screen, and stays dark - then you have a problem, likely a hardware problem.
That's what warranties are for! Get it fixed under warranty.
Or, even better, take your brand new MacBook Pro back to the store for a return, either a refund of your purchase price, or a swap to a another MacBook Pro. You can call AppleCare first, if you like - or if you purchased online from Apple. Same suggestion - get it replaced. AppleCare will tell you how to proceed with that.
